Bodington for Installation
Currently Bodington is released via Sourceforge.
Fully Working Demo CD
A Demonstration version of the Bodington software compiled by Oxford University Computing Services Learning Technologies Group with the help of OSS Watch is available from the following link:
Please note that this CD contains a fully working version of Bodington. Since it is running off a CD and doesn't modify your hard disk, resources you create will normally be lost when you reboot the PC, unless you select the option to save your database to a portable storage device or a partition on your hard disk.
You are welcome to transfer data and files to a hard-disk based operating system and run Bodington properly as you wish. It may be better to separately download Bodington itself and make a fresh installation on the operating system of your choice.
Prerequisites:
- A fast (at least broadband) network link to download the very large file.
- 700Mb of temporary space on the hard disk.
- A CD writer.
- Software for burning CDs capable of using ISO images.
- One blank CD with 700Mb or greater capacity.
- A PC configured to boot from CD.
If you lack any of the above requirements us the link to request a CD by post.
Guide to creating and using the CD:
- Download the file from the link shown and save to temporary space on your hard disk. This could take several hours depending on the speed of your network link.
- Put a blank CD in your CD Writer.
- Consult the help file for your CD burning software for instructions on selecting the iso image and burning to CD and carry them out.
- Label the CD.
- Put the CD into the CD drive of the PC you wish to run the demo on and reboot it.
- You may need to change BIOS settings to get the computer to boot from the CD instead of the hard disk.
- The operating system on your hard disk will be untouched by Knoppix which will run entirely from the CD.
- Wait for the Knoppix operating system to fully start up and display an informational web page about Bodington.
Troubleshooting
Knoppix detects the hardware in your computer and loads appropriate drivers. Some of the drivers are not reliable with all models of hardware. The most likely problems occur due to problems with various graphics cards because Knoppix attempts to make them operate at the highest possible performance. If Knoppix crashes on your PC you can try to set it to operate at lower performance levels. For example;
- Type fb800x600 at the Knoppix command prompt just after the CD boots in the short pause before Knoppix really starts up. This selects a fairly low performance graphics mode which is more likely to work on less common graphics cards.
Thanks to Alexis O'Connor, Peter Robinson and Colin Tatham of Oxford University Learning Technologies Group and to OSS Watch for putting this all together. Information on OSS Watch Knoppix
